Blue Heron Environmental Area
3320 N Rochester Road
Rochester, MI 48306
Purchased in 1990-91, the Blue Heron Environmental Area is quite possibly one of the Township's most unique parcels of land. The herons who give this park its name returned year after year. Great Blue Herons have not returned to the rookery since 2009. Nesting herons are very sensitive to disturbance within about 1000 feet of the rookery, including alteration of foraging areas.
The park contains 139 acres of wetlands, high-quality lowland forests, and open farmlands along Rochester Road between Gunn and Buell Roads. Fields are leased to local farmers at this time. Oakland Township residents may contact the Parks and Recreation Commission office to arrange for regulated access to the critical wildlife habitat at this park.
