Thank you for your interest in working as an Election Inspector. The following information will be helpful for you to know what is expected when you work as an Election Inspector for Oakland Township. Prior to each election, there is a training meeting for the workers where procedures are reviewed. Any new procedures or election laws are discussed and questions are answered.

Election Day begins at 6:00 a.m. at our eight precinct locations where workers prepare the precinct by setting up voting booths, putting up mandatory signage, preparing equipment and other election supplies. The precinct must be ready to go when the polls open at 7:00 a.m. Each precinct has an assigned Chairperson who acts as supervisor and interacts with the Township’s Clerks Office regarding questions and concerns.

In addition to our eight precincts, we also conduct an AVCB (Absent Voter Counting Board) in the board room of the Township Hall. They process all absentee ballots that have been returned to the Township and are sequestered until their work is completed and balanced after the polls close. The starting time varies by election. AVCB inspectors attend a separate training.  When the polls close at 8:00 p.m., inspectors complete necessary paperwork, pack up supplies, remove signage, and take down the equipment. This work is usually completed before or by 10:00 p.m.

Currently, election workers are paid a flat rate of $175 for Election Day and $25.00 for attendance at the training meeting. Chairpersons earn $225.00 for the day. We also pay a $10.00 food allowance as workers are not permitted to leave during the day. Most precincts conduct mini pot lucks for lunch and dinner breaks.
